6 Ways to Make Your Backpack Unique

In a world of backpacks, how do you make sure yours stands out from the crowd?

So, you’ve chosen your perfect backpack! But now you want it to *really* reflect your personality. You want it to be unique to you and not just another backpack in the vast sea of ubiquitous backpacks.

Good news: There are a few different ways to personalize your backpack. Most are easy and you can totally do these yourself at home.

Want to know how to make your backpack as unique as you are? Read on!

1. Add Patches to Your Backpack

A quick search for patches will give you so many options to choose! From your favourite anime characters, to national park destinations, there’s something for everybody!

Many patches can be ironed on. But even if they require sewing, it’s usually a pretty straightforward job — just a needle and thread required

2. Personalize Your Backpack with Bag Charms

Bag charms, which are essentially elaborate keychains, have become a popular way to personalize purses and backpacks. So much so, that designers like Coach and Kate Spade sell these accessories.

But you don’t need to pay an arm and a leg for a little personalization! A quick search for keychains will give you lots of cool options.

You can even make your own statement by combining different charms. It’s like a charm bracelet for your backpack!

3. Use Your Backpack as an Artist’s Canvas

If you’re the truly creative type, you can personalize your backpack with your own unique artwork. Whether you like simple line drawings or full on tattoo-style, the only limit is your imagination.

Draw inspiration from some of the cool collaborations brands like Eastpak have done with artists.

Pro-tip: Purchase fabric pens, markers or paint. These come in different tip sizes, and have ink that is designed to adhere to backpack fabric. Also, you might want to choose a lighter color backpack to make sure your art really “pops.”

4. Add Reflective Tape to Your Backpack

Not the crafty kind? Don’t worry… this one  is easy. Plus it adds a practical advantage to your back. All you need is some reflective tape and a pair of scissors.

Now, you could keep this really basic and just add a stripe. But you could also get more creative and cut out different shapes, like dots, stars, even a smiley face!

The added bonus here is increased visibility… especially important if you wear your backpack while cycling!

5. Get Pin Crazy on Your Backpack

Pins have become really popular the last few years and odds are you’ve collected a few of them. But where to put them… well on your backpack of course!

The nice thing about this approach is how versatile and changeable it is. Get tired of it? They’re easy to remove. Want to freshen up the look? Simply add or subtract some pins.

6. Embroider Your Backpack

If you’re really crafty, you can embroider directly on your backpack. For some people, this will mean a custom monogram, for others could mean a more artistic motif.

Browse embroidery kits to find inspiration. There’s something for every level of embroiderer.

Pro-tip: If this is your very first time doing embroidery, you might want to practice a bit before doing any stitching on your backpack!
